How common is “survival mode”?

Posted by Chevalier on May 20, 2009

I certainly recognize that not all escorts are living the high life, and the typical “economic analysis” sometimes posted by clients — “X visits per day x $Y x 20 day/month x =” — are understandably offensive.  P4P is not like a normal 9 – 5 job where you can count on a reliable stream of work.  There’s a lot of time taken up in marketing, screening, making arrangements, etc.  And a lady can’t count on X number of visits per week anyway.  Clients may come and go; a lot of them only see a lady once or twice before moving on, or concentrate on the “flavor of the month”; reliable regulars may be relatively few.  In today’s economic climate, some clients have less disposable income to spend on P4P; they may be playing less frequently or “bargain hunting.”  It’s a tough world.  Some ladies may get very few calls a week/month.

I’ve known some ladies who, in good times, were able to gross $150,000 per year.  They were probably a pretty small proportion of the escort population.  Others are at the other end of the spectrum, just barely getting by.  I remember several years ago Lady X posting on ASPD that she was only grossing maybe $1,400 a month.  It shocked me; not necessarily that Lady X, specifically, wasn’t getting much business, because I didn’t know her well, but that she stayed in the business despite that minimal income.  Maybe I’m spoiled, because I’ve never had to survive on that level of income (although some of my relatives have).

In any event, I never gave it a lot of thought.  But I guess I assumed that there were only a few ladies at the high end of the range or at the low end of the range, and that most of the ladies were somewhere in the middle; maybe grossing $40,000 – $60,000 a year, or possibly a bit higher.  I’m not sure why I thought that.  In retrospect, a lady grossing $25,000 or $30,000 wouldn’t necessarily have better options — some would, but others wouldn’t, particularly if they lacked education or experience — so it’s not as though they could easily change jobs for something better.

In any event, yesterday I ran across a post over on Antonella’s blog.  She, too, is in “survival mode” (around 7 to 8 sessions a month) and suspects it is much more common than most clients realize.  (She links to a blog by another lady who similarly is just getting by.)

It’s not talked about a lot.  Of course, announcing to the world that your business is not doing well probably won’t attract a lot of clients (at least, the ones who aren’t attracted by the prospect of using your desperation to haggle for lower rates); an appearance of success breeds success.  So the ladies don’t have a strong incentive to be candid about it.  On P4P boards or blogs, probably as many ladies report that they’re doing well despite the economy as say their business is down significantly, and some of the former may just be pretending.  Even the latter often don’t clarify exactly how bad they’re doing.  So maybe there are a lot more ladies in survival mode — say, less than $20,000 gross annually — than we realize.

Obviously, candid discussions between businesses and customers about how well the business is doing are not always easy.  It’s probably even harder in P4P to have discussions like that.  So it’s unlikely we’ll ever get more than a few anecdotes; certainly not a broad, representative view that would quantify how well the ladies are doing.  And I certainly don’t have the answer of how to increase their revenue stream, whether in general or for a specific lady.

But it has me wondering.

To clarify: I am certainly not trying to imply how ladies should react if business is slow. An economic slowdown affects different ladies to different extents. I don’t know if a particular lady has a slowdown, and even if she is, there are many approaches she might try; most guys suggest discounts (surprise, surprise!) but there are a lot of alternatives, and the lady will know better than I do what’s best for her.

I was just a little bit surprised at exactly how bad “business is down” might be, as I had subconsciously calibrated that at a level that may have been way higher than realistic.

Here’s a thread from TER about the subject. A few interesting excerpts:

This question and others that are similar have been asked for the last year…are you hoping some ladies will be stupid enough to admit it under their escort name so you can call and try and beat them down?

[Under the heading "You don't expect honest answers, do you?"]It does not take an economist to figure this one out. Many providers are hurting. They just don’t want to admit it. Some are still doing well, but a much smaller percentage.

But seriously, don’t act like you know what is going on in OUR business because obviously you don’t. If you are looking for ladies to cut prices for you can buy Heinz ketchup at Kroger price, then you might want to stick to CL or backpage.

I don’t see a reason for ANY lady to cut rates. Just like Mama said, why fix something that isn’t broke.

I think your statement is not only none of your business either way, but completely irrelevant.

The only guys who are preoccupied with how much a provider makes are the ones who don’t value the service and resent paying for it in the first place.

The only reason to ask about this on this forum is to see if you could possibly gain some kind of leverage when trying to ‘negotiate’ rates with a prospective provider.

    ——————-

I don’t bring this up in hopes of getting leverage and a better deal. If I want to see a lady, her regular rate is not going to dissuade me (as long as not in the extreme HDH range). And, no, I don’t really expect honest answers, even anonymously. I’m just honestly curious, so it occurred to me to post about it.

A reader emails to report he’s also seeing more ladies willing to do whatever it takes to get a session. (Similar to what’s described here, although I think Peridot may not have been quite as desperate as the ladies my reader had heard from.) He offers this advice:

Bad times for providers, and while I will take advantage to some extent, there are limits. This is not the time to negotiate for bottom dollar.

There is also, I think, and by some ladies (not necessarily all), a moderate amount of resentment. Not just at the guys who attempt to exploit market conditions to get the best value for their $$$. And not just at those who are jerks in other respects. Toward those guys, resentment is not only expected but appropriate. Or perhaps generalized resentment of the fact that the economy isn’t better and they can’t make more or find better-paying legit jobs.

The resentment is directed also at the guys who don’t/didn’t realize how bad things were. *shrug* I plead guilty. I don’t buy into the glamorous portrayls of the high-end call girls making $200,000 or more a year. There are some, but they’re damned few and far between. At the same time, yes, I probably subconsciously assumed most independent escorts (excluding AMPs and studios and streetwalkers, for example) around here, if they were good at their craft and approached it professionally, could gross somewhere in the $40,000 – $60,000 range. That may have been way too high. From the comments over on Antonella’s blog, $15,000 – $35,000 may be more accurate.

These threads also always generate posts from certain providers that want to assure us that their business has never been better. Perhaps. Perhaps not. But it makes sense. In business, you never want anyone to know you are anything less than very successful. Can you imagine the provider that would actually state that her business has dropped significantly?

I suspect some ladies try to make it sound better than it is, because the image of success itself contributes to success.

And I suspect some ladies try to make it sound worse than it is, hoping for sympathy. (Although more likely to result in guys looking to get a bargain basement price.)

    Without audited financial statements . . . . :)

A related entry on Mariko’s blog. Interesting, and sad, read.
